Zakir Hossin, pirojpur: Leaders and activists of Bangladesh Islami Chhatra Shibir staged a protest rally and held a roadside meeting in Pirojpur on Monday, demanding the immediate arrest and exemplary punishment of those responsible for the killing of a Shibir leader in Gaibandha.
The procession, organised by the Pirojpur district unit of Chhatra Shibir, began at the C.O. Office intersection in the afternoon. Marching through the town's main roads, including the Krishna Chura intersection, the rally concluded with a roadside gathering in front of the district office.
Addressing the gathering were district president Imran Khan, secretary Mizanur Rahman and finance secretary Abu Saleh. According to the organisers, leaders and activists from different parts of the district joined the programme.
In their speeches, the speakers alleged that the government had failed to take effective action against those involved in political violence and demanded a prompt, impartial investigation into the killing of Shibir leader Saifullah Bari. They called for the immediate arrest of all accused and their exemplary punishment through due legal process.
District president Imran Khan said protests had been held in different parts of the country following the killing, but claimed that no visible action had yet been taken. He urged the authorities to ensure justice and called on party activists to remain prepared for future organisational programmes.
According to police records, Saifullah Bari, 24, president of Bonarpara Union Chhatra Shibir in Saghata upazila of Gaibandha, was fatally stabbed on June 21 during violence surrounding the election of a local government primary school managing committee.
Following the incident, the victim's father, Habibur Rahman, filed a murder case with Saghata Police Station, naming six individuals, including local Jubo Dal convener Mukul Mia, while also accusing 14–15 unidentified persons.
